When I was going through the most challenging times in my life, I wanted nothing more than to read something — anything — from someone who had been there before me and had come out the other side in one piece.

And then there were the times when I felt totally isolated; when what I was going through was so immensely private I dared not tell anybody out of embarrassment or shame or both. Surely someone has been through this before me, I would think to myself. I’m not the first. I’m not the only one.

You do it because you have to. It is your life’s calling; all you ever wanted to do. And every step of your life so far has led you here. Maybe you do it because your dad told you that you could do anything you set your mind to. Or because he didn’t. Maybe you have nothing to lose. Or everything to lose and yet it is still worth the risk because you know. You just know it will work.

Whatever is driving you, you do it because you could not wait any longer until the time is right because it never will be perfectly right. It’s right, right now. You do it because you believe you can.

As I drove to the rehabilitation center where my mom lay waiting for me, I replayed the phone conversation I had just had with the doctor in my mind: “Your mother is a very sick woman who did not want life saving measures.” Words that make you feel like you are moving in slow motion in a movie where you don’t belong. A dull ringing sound made itself known in my ears as I looked out to the left and took in the impossibly blue sky. It was so mild this February morning and I wished I were going anywhere but where I was headed. Then I saw it. A large blue heron flying parallel right beside me. My Dad, I thought to myself. Accompanying me as a messenger of spirit, a harbinger of peace, here to tell me I need to stand alone.

It is in the 4am alarm that rouses you from your cozy warm bed in the darkness. It is in the quiet of the morning when you are staring at a blank computer screen. You walk away for a cup of something hot. You return. Still blank.

It is in your morning run, on this day in the rain. Where your idea comes from the woods on the trail because your mind was silent and you were listening.
